What does DHT have to do with Hormonal Acne?
Recent studies have shown that acne affects around 85 percent of the population. It may manifest itself during puberty, but many older adults have also suffered from outbreaks for many years.
The most common type of acne is called hormonal acne. This type of acne is usually caused by a fluctuation in hormonal levels, a very common occurrence during a female's menstrual cycle.
In most women, hormonal acne appears because women's estrogen levels are high at mid-cycle. The hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands, causing extra sebum and, therefore, acne breakouts.
Pregnancy is also associated to hormonal acne breakouts. During the third trimester of pregnancy a woman's body will go through hormonal fluctuations as her levels of testosterone increase and her levels of estrogen decrease. This hormonal rollercoaster can lead to acne breakouts.
This type of acne usually presents itself on the face but can also appear on the chest and back. Hormonal acne is usually mild and not prone to leaving behind acne scars. More than likely it will only produce papules, small nodules, and comedones.
Because hormonal acne is caused by internal factors, the best acne treatment isn't necessarily an acne cream. Of course these can help to deal with the symptoms, but you will need something much stronger to deal with the root of the problems. This is where DHT inhibitors come in.
DHT stands for dihydrotestosterone, which is an androgen derived from testosterone. This steroid hormone has been used to suppress tumors in cancer victims. It also plays an important part in male pattern baldness.
But what does that have to do with acne? DHT stimulates the production of sebum which is the main cause of clogged pores. For this reason, it plays an important role in the development of acne.
To help remedy this problem it is important to neutralize the DHT in your system. There are many dermatologist treatments that include DHT inhibitors to help control hormonal acne.
Medications such as finastride and dutasteride are normally used to treat problems stemming from DHT. The biggest problem with medications containing DHT suppressors is that they've been created to treat male pattern baldness and not acne. So it is highly recommended that you consult with your doctor before choosing either one of these medications, because their long term effects are still unknown.
While waiting for hormonal therapy to take effect, it is a good idea to rely on natural skin care products to address any active acne. Natural skin care products are safe and can therefore be used with any skin type, free of unwanted side-effects.
Both adult acne and teenage acne can be the cause of hormonal fluctuations. Sometimes is may seem as if hormonal therapy is the only answer, but there are some natural acne solutions that contain Helix aspersa muller extract. An ingredient found in BIOSKINCLEAR, BIOACNECARE and BIOSKINFORTE that can get to the root cause of your acne breakout.
