Information about Burn Scars and Treatment
Burn injuries have grown tremendously within recent years, and are considered a serious problem. Thankfully it has been in these past several years that medical professionals have truly begun to realize and understand the problems associated with burns. According to statistics, at least 50 percent of burn accidents can be prevented. But, until we raise more awareness about burn safety we are forced to deal with the after effects which are burn scars.
Types of Burns
Burn scarring depends on the type of burn. The severity of the burn is determined by the person's age, as well as the size and depth of the burn. Most commonly, burns are categorized by depth into degrees from first to third. First degree burns are the most minimal in damage and affect only the epidermis, the surface layer of the skin. First degree burns cause pain, redness and swelling. With proper treatment of first degree burns it is possible to prevent burn scars. To treat, the skin should be flushed or soaked and then covered with a sterile non adhesive bandage to protect it from friction or pressure. A second degree burn affects the outer layer (epidermis) and the under lying layer of skin (dermis) and causes redness, pain, swelling, and blisters. Damage can be done to hair follicles and sweat glands due to second degree burns. To heal burns of the second degree, you should first elevate the wound and cover it with a cool moist sterile bandage to protect it. Do not apply cold water, compresses, or any type of ointment nor allow the burn to be contaminated. A third degree burn appears charred or white and affects the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. These burns are so deep that they do damage to the skin tissue and often leave the skin feeling numb. Treat third degree burns similarly to second degree, but make sure you get the person to a medical professional as soon as possible.
Types of Burn Scars
The process to heal burns is similar to other wound healing which means that it is likely to result in scarring. Keloid, hypertrophic and contractures are the three types of burn related scars. Keloid scars will grow beyond the site of injury and are thick and raised. Hypertrophic scars have a very similar appearance but remain within the wound site. A contracture scar is a surface scar that tightens the skin and may affect underlying muscles and tendons which could lead to limited mobility.
Surgical Procedures
There are two major types of surgical burn scar removal procedures that can help conceal scarring due to burns: Dermabrasion and skin grafts. Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure to improve or minimize the appearance of scars, restore function and correct disfigurement resulting from an injury. Dermabrasion shaves or scrapes off the top layers of skin in order to smooth it out. This is able to smooth the skin surface by will not actually remove the scars. A skin graft is a surgical procedure where a piece of skin is transplanted from one area to another area of the body. Skin grafts are done under general anesthesia and often require at least 6 weeks and up to a few months to heal. Most skin graft procedures are successful, but some may require additional surgeries if the initial graft does no heal properly.
